As the list of essential cosmetics grows—contour, lashes, highlighter—so does the need for a proper cleansing routine. One swipe with a makeup wipe simply won’t stand up against waterproof eyeliner, brow powder and environmental aggressors that are a consequence of daily life.

Enter double cleansing, coined to describe the process of washing your face not once, but twice. With busy lives, it is tempting to go the quickest route possible in choosing your skincare routine, but making that extra effort will have a heavy impact on the quality and clarity of your skin.

“Washing your face is probably the most important step in your regimen. It resets the clock and helps all of your lotions and potions work so much better in the long run,” explains Nordstrom Regional Beauty Director Kevin Sifflet.

Miah Le, a medical aesthetician at Renew Beauty Med Spa & Salon, advises that clocking a few extra minutes at the sink is worth it. “Take the time to really massage your skin to get the product into the pores and loosen up the makeup,” she says. Washing your face in the morning hours is non-negotiable as well. “You do still sweat at night, and cleansing helps to dissolve all that. It also boosts circulation and wakes up the nerves, so you look a little more vibrant.”

Skincare counters are filled with oils, balms, micellar waters, creams and gels, all suited for different purposes on different skins. “It’s great to start with an oil, then go into a foam or gel,” says Sifflet. “The key is to remove the makeup first and then actually cleanse the skin with a cleanser that is correct for your skin type.”

Your perfect combination of cleansers takes a bit of research and, of course, trial and error. The choices above, curated from NorthPark’s bevy of beauty brands, provide a simple place to start on your way to healthier, happier skin.
