Everyone knows that the best movies are released in the summer, and this year is no exception. So sit back, relax, and grab a tub of popcorn. Here are my top 5 family flicks coming to an AMC NorthPark 15 movie theatre near you.

Maleficent
Opens May 30, 2014

This is the top pick of the summer! Produced by Disney and starring Angelina Jolie, this movie retells the story of Snow White from the villain’s perspective. You can expect fascinating scenery and an action-packed adventure with all kinds of new interesting characters, but be for-warned that it might be a bit intense for the younger crowd.

How to Train Your Dragon 2
Opens June 13, 2014

Taking the second spot behind Disney’s summer blockbuster is DreamWork’s, How to Train Your Dragon 2.  If it’s anything like the first one, which I assume it will be, we can expect lots of action and adventure as Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, fly threw the skies to save the day for their Viking village.

Planes: Fire & Rescue
Opens July 18, 2014

Another Disney hit is getting a sequel this summer as former crop duster Dusty retires from racing to join forces with an aerial firefighting team.  This movie is a cross between Cars and Planes, and is sure to be faced pace and funny.

Ernest & Celestine
Opens June 6, 2014

Here is an animated French film that might be the wildcard for the summer.  The cartoon flick, Ernest & Celestine, was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year and tells the tale of the rare friendship between a mouse and a bear.  The animation is somewhat of a throw-back to the 80s when cartoons actually looked like drawings.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Opens August 8, 2014

Whoever thought a bunch of teenage turtles running around fighting bad guys wouldn’t have lasting power (me!) stands corrected. The final pick of the summer for families with boys features the heroes on the half-shell as they take on crime-ridden New York City to save the city from the evil Shredder.
