Known for her monumental public works and site-specific land art, Beverly Pepper challenged traditional gender roles through her artistic practice. Mastering welding by the mid-1960s, Pepper defied the perception of large-scale sculpture as predominately masculine and pushed the usual boundaries of metalwork.

Black Angel exemplifies Pepper’s experimentation with metal, along with her skill in transforming the medium. The sculpture is comprised of reflective stainless-steel forms; the stacked open-square shapes are posed both playfully and seemingly precariously, rebelling against the usual grounded weightiness of metal sculpture.
