Intermodal Elevation is emblematic of Gillick’s interest in both industry and architecture, and is constructed of readymade universal industrial materials, powder-coated aluminum and Plexiglas. “Intermodal” is defined as the movement of cargo by several different modes of transportation wherein each mode has a different carrier and contract—a very specific and niche aspect of our industrial infrastructure. “Elevation” refers to the architectural term used to describe a drawing or diagram of buildings or other structures when projected on a vertical plane. With this in mind, one’s visual experience with Intermodal Elevation changes—the work flows from color-form abstraction to screens, a cityscape or storefront windows.
