Through the repetition of modular elements such as bricks or his signature beads, Jean-Michel Othoniel creates exquisite jewelry-like sculptures whose relationship to the human scale ranges from intimacy to monumentality. Comprised of mirror polished stainless steel, Lotus Miroir exemplifies Othoniel’s predilection for materials with reflective properties—a hallmark of his practice since the early 1990s.

“When I do work in gold leaf or in mirror, the sculpture embraces the nature around it in its reflection,” Othoniel states. Monumental yet delicate, baroque yet minimal, his shiny contemplative sculptural forms harmonize the viewer with their environment through reflection and motion.
