What type of vacation do you have planned this summer? Are you going on a countryside retreat, a city escape or maybe a beach getaway? I met with Anthropologie’s personal stylist, Sara Garza, at Anthropologie at NorthPark Center, for tips on what to pack for various vacation scenarios.
Sara showed me how to pack for both the beach and for a city vacation. Each packing list included 5-6 apparel pieces, one scarf and a few other accessories. Can you believe she was able to create anywhere from 8-12 outfits for a vacation? The key to packing is using one color palette. Use solid neutrals, and no more than two patterns.
Beach Vacation
Beach Vacation Outfit #1
Danthonia Dress by DRA, $148?Provo Oversized Scarf, $58
Pearled Foxglove Necklace, $68
Bright Stripe Sandals by Dolce Vita, $69
Beach Vacation Outfit #2
Provo oversized Scarf, $58
Scooped Chambray Tank by Cloth and Stone, $78
Tailored Remy Shorts by Cartonnier, $68
Tassel Wisp Necklace, $58
Pinto Basin Clutch by Miss Albright, $98
Bright Stripe Sandals by Dolce Vita, $69
To pack lightly you have to think creatively about your clothes. For instance, Sara used a scarf as a wrap and as a vest. Surprisingly, it is not difficult at all to create a vest out of a scarf. Sara has a great tutorial on her Instagram account (@stylemesara) along with other fashion tips.
City Vacation
City Vacation Outfit #1
Linen Shirtdress by Cloth and Stone, $138
Riverway Heels by Dolce Vita, $98

City Vacation Outfit #2

Tea Rose Joggers by Lavi by Sam and Lavi, $118
Palette-Dip Bib Necklace by Bluma Project, $88
Riverway Heels by Dolce Vita, $98
Spofford Metallic Crossbody, $118
You also want to pack as many functional items as possible. Sara used a blouse as a top to go along with pants, but also as a light layer over a shirtdress.
To recap all of Sara’s great advice, here a few key things to remember when packing:
- Sharp separates such as shorts, tanks, blouses and pullovers are the foundation of your outfits.
- One-and-done staples such as a versatile dress (maxi, fit & flare) or jumpsuit are perfect to throw on.
- Graphic accents are a great way to jazz up your outfit.
- Textural accessories with whimsical flare like a tassel necklaces or fun clutch will add that final touch to pull the ensemble together.
