Did you know that more than 15 million tons of used textile waste is generated each year in the United States and that the average American throws away approximately 80 pounds of used clothing per year? There are 16 stores in NorthPark Center with recycling programs that make it easy for you to recycle containers and clothes and get rewarded for it.
Stop by the following stores below with your items you want to recycle, because nothing is better than shopping and doing good.
American Eagle
When you bring any of your old jeans to AE, they will recycle them in partnership with Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program to be used as housing insulation. Give any pair of jeans and receive $10 off a pair of brand new AE jeans just for pitching in. Since denim is made mostly from cotton, a sustainable fiber, it can be broken down to its natural state and recycled. This means the all those old jeans can be diverted from landfills and upcycled into natural cotton fiber insulation.
Aveda
The Aveda recycling program encourages you to bring back and deposit any empty Aveda product or accessory that cannot be recycled through your local curbside program. In addition to all nonrecyclable packaging items, this includes items such as old makeup brushes, broken compacts, tubes, tubs, caps, and more. Items such as applicator sponges, makeup clamshells, and shopping totes are also encouraged. Through its recycling program, Aveda seeks to minimize packaging and maximize the use of post-consumer recycled materials, using materials that can be and are recyclable, and by designing packaging so that the individual parts can be separated for recycling.
Drop any of the following items in the Aveda recycling boxes in store:
Plastic
Glass
Metal
Mixed
Dispensing systems
Applicators and accessories
bareMinerals
With bareMinerals “Give Back Get Back” recycling program, you can receive FAB points for every item you recycle. You can then use these FAB points towards future bareMinerals purchases. It’s a win-win! You’ll be giving something back to the environment and getting something back for yourself, too. Bring your makeup and skincare empties back to the bareMinerals store and drop them off in the designated bin. It accepts all brands and you can recycle up to five empties at a time.
Eileen Fisher
In 2009, Eileen Fisher started a take-back program—part of a circular system designed to preserve the value of our clothes at every stage, in any condition. It’s collected over 1.2 million garments since then, designating pieces that are beyond repair as raw material for Waste No More, an experimental design studio. The studio transforms damaged clothes into one-of-a-kind artworks, pillows, wall hangings, and accessories. Stop by Eileen Fisher with clothes in any condition and receive a $5 Renew Rewards card for each item.
H&M
Drop off your unwanted clothing in the recycling box at H&M and for every bag of clothes you recycle, you will receive a discount card for 15% off your next in-store purchase! All textiles are welcome – any brand, any condition – even odd socks, worn-out T-shirts and old sheets. The textiles are then sent to the nearest recycling plant, where they’re sorted by hand into three categories:
Rewear — clothing that can be worn again will be sold as second-hand clothes.
Reuse — old clothes and textiles will be turned into other products, such as cleaning cloths.
Recycle — everything else is turned into textile fibers and used for things like insulation.
In 2018, H&M collected 20,649 tons of textiles for reuse and recycling through its garment collecting initiative.
J.Crew
J.Crew, Blue Jeans Go Green™, and Habitat for Humanity have created a program to recycle used denim into housing insulation. "The partnership, which aims to address the full life cycle of product and speaks to the brand’s deep investment in environmental impact, diverts post-consumer denim from landfills and converting it into a material that helps build communities," the brand explained in a press release. Bring in your unwanted jeans and receive $20 off a pair of new ones!
Kiehl’s Since 1851
For each empty, full-size container you bring in for recycling to Kiehl's, you'll receive one stamp. Once you've racked up 10 stamps, you'll receive a free travel-size Kiehl's product. Only full-size product will receive a stamp. Deluxe samples and complimentary products can be returned for recycling but do not warrant a stamp. Each customer can redeem one reward per month (one reward = ten empty full-sized containers) for a 2.5 oz travel-size product worth up to $11 in value.
L’Occitane
In order to continually reduce its environmental impact, L'Occitane has partnered with TerraCycle to make its used products nationally recyclable. Come into L'Occitane and drop-off your used beauty and skin care products during your next visit and receive 10% off a new full size product. Once collected, the beauty and skin care items are sorted and separated by material composition. The separated items are then cleaned, shredded, and made into new recycled products.
*10% off one full size product, valid only on the day of drop-off. Not combinable with any other offers. Acceptable items: Beauty packaging such as lip balm tubes, makeup remover bottles and pumps, fragrances bottles and pumps, and deodorant sticks. Madewell
Like shopping and doing good? Drop off your pre-loved denim at Madewell, and you’ll get $20 off a new pair of jeans. Their friends from the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program will turn your recycled denim into housing insulation for organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Since its beginning, the program has built 750+ houses with insulation as well as saving 293 tons of waste from a landfill because of recycled jeans.
Nespresso
Nespresso wants to help you reduce your waste by filling your Nespresso recycling bag with used capsules and drop it off in store. Every time you drop off your bag with used capsules, you will receive a new one for the coffee-filled mornings ahead.
Nike
Nike’s “Reuse-A-Shoe” program recycles athletic shoes at the end of their life, giving them a new life through Nike Grind. Nike Grind materials are created from recycled athletic footwear and surplus manufacturing scraps to make performance products, ranging from new footwear and apparel to sports surfaces like gym floors and playgrounds.
The North Face
The North Face’s “Clothes the Loop” program encourages people to drop off unwanted clothing and footwear at its stores. Recycle your used apparel and footwear (any condition, any brand) and earn a $10 reward toward your next purchase of $100 or more at The North Face. The items dropped in the collection bins are sent to their non-profit partner, Soles4Souls. Its mission is to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing. The items put into the bins are used for disaster relief or micro-enterprise programs that aim to provide small entrepreneurs with business opportunities.
Origins
In 2009 Origins created “Return to Origins” which was the first recycling program for cosmetic packaging within the beauty industry. It accepts a wide range of packaging from any brand, including any glass or plastic jars, bottles, tubes, lipstick covers, and caps. Just drop off your empty cosmetic packaging to the boutique in order to reduce our impact on the planet.
ZARA
Stop by ZARA with any clothes you no longer wear and put them in one of the containers in the store. All clothing collected will be donated in aid of non-profit organizations. The clothes will be separated and classified to ensure they get sent to the most suitable destination. Your clothes will be donated, recycled, and transformed into new fabrics, or they will be marketed in order to finance the social projects developed by these non-profit organizations.
