Plant extracts are all the rage in beauty these days, and Clarins is an industry expert.

Phyto- and aroma-therapies have been at the foundation of the esteemed French brand since it originated 64 years ago in a Paris spa.

Today, Clarins emphasizes organic, sustainable ingredients, and all of its products are free of parabens and phthalates.

It operates spas worldwide from New York to Beijing. Plus, Clarins offers a full line of color cosmetics and was first to introduce a tinted lip oil.

“Until now we were more living in somebody else’s house, a Macy’s, Nordstrom, Dillard’s,” explains company spokeswoman Nassima Kebir. “We want to start providing the full Clarins experience, to give a taste of our heritage, our products and specific application techniques.”

Clarins boutique boasts a French chic vibe and specially trained staff.

“All of our treatments are really personalized,” Kebir points out. “The idea is always to put the customer in the heart of her decisions about skin care.”

Its signature facial employs gentle massage of face and neck to stimulate lymphatic drainage, thus reducing puffiness and improving product penetration. Each treatment is customized to the individual.

Clarins’ hero product is Double Serum, the anti-aging blockbuster that sold 3 million units worldwide last year. Double Serum blends 21 plant extracts for hydration, regeneration, oxygenation, brightening and spot treatment.

The brand recently extended its line with Extra Firming Day Cream and Extra Firming Night Cream, which contain extract of the kangaroo paw (so named because its spindly flowers resemble kangaroo toes) to help tighten skin.

Clarins is innovative with makeup, too. The company’s 4-Colour All-in-One Pen contains three eyeliners and a lip color –  ideal for travel. Shade 03 features a summer palette of turquoise green, black, gray and fuchsia.
